Jenie and Alice 2019

Jenie Lau draws from her diverse education, movement training, artistic performance and teaching career, to enhance the artistic abilities of athletes.  As a dance educator she believes in the quality of interaction between teacher and student.  Artistic athletes that have trained under her have ranged from competitive gymnasts, dance teams, dancers and figure skaters.  Since 2015, Jenie has worked with numerous figure skaters in private lessons and group classes, and partnered with coaches, skating rinks and clubs, to develop skaters’ quality of movement through her specialized dance training.

Jenie’s movement background includes the Korean martial art Tae Kwon Do, Korean traditional dance, classical ballet, jazz, modern and musical theatre.  She is a World Tae Kwon Do Federation recognized 1st degree Black Belt, who trained extensively under her father, who is a 9th degree Black Belt Master.  Her foundational dance training began at the Tri Cities Academy of Ballet and continued with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre, International Ballet Competition, and as a member of Mid Columbia Regional Ballet, performing classical and contemporary repertoire.  Her experiences also include competition dance and dance teams, as a member of the Eastern WA Elite Dance Team, competing at the Universal Dance Association Championships.  As a lifelong artist, she continues to expand her knowledge of other movement styles to add to her teaching and choreography repertoire such as ballroom dance and Kpop.

Prior to creating the Young EduArts program, Jenie’s teaching career spanned a broad range of educational and movement channels.   This included instruction of Tae Kwon Do at her father’s martial arts schools, ballet and jazz at traditional and competition dance schools, technique instruction for high school dance teams, dance education for performing arts preschools and elementary schools.   As a youth arts advocate, she created and held the role of Outreach Coordinator with the non profit Eastside Youth Dance Theatre, providing artistic education at preschool and elementary schools throughout the community.

Jenie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education and Family Studies from the University of Washington.  She is a professional member with the National Dance Education Organization and the Dance Educators Association of Washington.  She resides in both Issaquah, WA and Irvine, CA.
